Do You Know The Symptoms of Stroke?
http://livingafterastroke.com - How well do you know the symptoms of stroke? Are you prepared to deal with the symptoms of stroke? Stroke symptoms can help you saving somebody's life. http://livingafterastroke.comW... this new research is important, the traditional stroke warning signs are still the most common symptoms of stroke. The new findings are a helpful reminder — to both you and your doctor — that women may have different symptoms. The symptoms of stroke are distinct because they happen quickly: Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body); Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech; Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; Sudden severe headache with no known cause. Receiving treatment quickly after a stroke is critical to lowering the risk for disability and even death. Rapid treatment requires that persons 1) recognize the warning symptoms of stroke and 2) call 9-1-1 immediately. These findings indicate a need to increase awareness of stroke warning symptoms in the entire population, and particularly among blacks, Hispanics, men, and persons at lower education levels. In addition, increased education efforts in multiple languages might help improve awareness among non-English-speaking Hispanics and others. What are the symptoms of stroke? To help people recognise the symptoms of stroke quickly, The Stroke Association has funded research into FAST - the Face Arm Speech Test - which is used by paramedics to diagnose stroke prior to a person being admitted to hospital. By diagnosing the possibility of stroke before reaching hospital, it is possible for appropriate referral to a stroke unit to be made as quickly as possible. What is FAST? FAST requires an assessment of three specific symptoms of stroke. Facial weakness - can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? Arm weakness - can the person raise both arms? Speech problems - can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? The warning signs or symptoms of stroke may occur alone or in combination. They may last a few seconds or up to 24 hours, and then disappear. These signs are mini-strokes and should not be ignored. They indicate a hidden problem with blood flow, which could trigger a stroke. The severity of the symptoms depends on the area of the brain affected and the cause.
